Preventive Medicine

Vaccinations

Many diseases that the average horse is at risk for can be prevented with appropriate vaccinations. Vaccinations for Rabies, Tetanus, Eastern and Western Encephalitis, and West Nile Virus are recommended for all horses. Additional risk-based vaccines such as Influenza, Rhino, and Strangles can be added based upon your horse’s individual needs.

Dental Care

Routine dental care includes an oral examination and dental float. This care is critical to ensure that dental problems do not interfere with your horse’s performance, and to detect and treat dental abnormalities that can lead to nutritional deficiencies, colic, and discomfort. See our Dental Services section.

Examinations

Regular, detailed physical examinations can help pick up abnormalities before they become more serious. Cardiac, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and nervous system problems can all be discovered with a thorough physical exam.

Parasite Prevention

Quarterly fecal egg counts to monitor parasite burden have replaced rotational deworming as the standard of care. Egg counts guide treatment, minimize the need to give medications, help to keep the gastrointestinal tract healthy, and prevent the development of resistance to dewormers.

Blood Work

Much like detailed physical examinations, routine lab work can help reveal issues such as organ and immune system dysfunction, endocrine disease, and anemia prior to them becoming life-threatening problems.
